A Brief Summary of the Catholic Women's League in South Africa
The Catholic Women's League was founded by Margaret Fletcher in England
in the early 1900's and was established in South Africa in 1931.
The National Council was formed in 1952.
The Catholic Women's League
- is affiliated with WUCWO (World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations)
- has the approval and support of the South African Bishops' Conference and is
under the direction of the Conference Commission for the Laity and functions
in 22 Diocese in numerous parishes and has a membership of over 4000.
- its membership is open to all Catholic women who come together to form the
Parish unit, with Diocesan and National representational levels.
- strives to be a sign of hope and love, of harmony and reconciliation, a sign
that people of all socio-economic and cultural groups can be one; can
be unified, can conduct themselves with dignity and kindness, with thought
for others, to make the world a better place; to bring our land into the
Kingdom, to work out God's design.
- seeks to develop leadership qualities and to enable members to take active
roles in the affairs of the community.
- maintains liaison with the South African Council of Catholic Laity and with
other Councils in accordance with the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity
of Vatican II.
